Hi! I spent the last couple of hours reading this forum and I must thank everyone for some very good info and insight I found here.
What brought me here in the first place, is that I'm seeking info about publishing eBooks. I know some very talented folks who are writing some interesting stuff but they are having a hard time finding a publisher to print their work. Most of them are self-publishing on their own weblogs and sites but without any visible results.
I want to create a small publishing house to publish and distribute their work as eBooks but seems impossible to find anything online related to this that isn't another viral marketing business or plan.
Knowing that the authors would be more inclined to make their work available to a bigger audience than to choose some kind of fancier protection that would limit it to Windows users, I would appreciate if someone could point me to / answer the following: - Where can I find some solid advice and info about the publish process? (I mean, from this stage where I'm now (planing) to the final "selling the goods" stage) - Being the principal objective the promotion of the authors, selling would be important but not crucial. All profit from an eBook would be used to finance its printing (in paper). Would you advise giving the eBook away and ask for donations? Or selling the eBook and try fight piracy? If fighting piracy, how? - Related to the previous question, does anyone remeber Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow? (I tried to link it but word censoring replaced the word "c r a p" for **** inhttp://****hound.com/down/) - What kind of security can I get from password-protected PDFs? - Any recomendation for a good and free book management system to run the site? - Any similar personal experience you would like to share?
