I am a new author and have recently completed writing a music eBook. Even though I am giving it away free on my web sites, I am interested to know how many people downloaded it. I do not wish to use any form or collect email addresses from my readers. Are there any other ways where one can effectively track the number of downloads? One of my web host does not have detailed web stats for each files. Are there any free software available for this purpose? How do others do their tracking. I would greatly appreciate if someone can help. Thank you.

I use the free service fromhttp://www.linkcounter.com After you've signed up, you enter the details of the product, and the real download address (eghttp://mysite.com/myebook.exe) and a price if you are charging. You then get the code to put on your page in place of the standard link. Stats are emailed as you set them up - weekly, monthly, never.
I've only had one period when their site was down - they were hit by a hacker and were down for about two weeks. I have a direct link on the page, in small print, so that people can still download if their site goes down again.
I've found it a useful service, and reliable apart from that one time. I've used them for about a year.

I had the same problem and put up a cgi script from these guys here: http://www.schlabo.com/ If you are familiar with the idea of a cgi-bin, it's really easy to install, quite automated, and free. When someone downloads, it also logs it, thanks them, and you have an admin page to see summaries. Just a thought - I've no connection with them. Chris
